Frequently Asked Questions - IPPT@SAFRA

What is IPPT@SAFRA?

Developed under a strategic partnership with the SAF, IPPT@SAFRA provides more convenience, flexibility and greater accessibility to NSmen. IPPT@SAFRA is very similar to the IPPT administered at Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCCs), with the exception that the 2.4km station is conducted indoors on a calibrated treadmill to compensate for the differences in environmental conditions. IPPT@SAFRA is available at SAFRA Jurong, SAFRA Punggol, SAFRA Tampines and SAFRA Toa Payoh.

Who is eligible to take IPPT at EnergyOne?

IPPT@SAFRA Gyms is open to all IPPT-eligible NSmen with PES A, B/B1, and B2/C1 status. NSmen who take IPPT at SAFRA Gyms are not eligible for incentive awards. IPPT@SAFRA Gyms is not applicable for NSmen who hold the vocation of Commandos or Naval Diving Unit (NDU) Divers.

How often can I take my IPPT at EnergyOne?

You may attempt as many IPPTs as you want at EnergyOne. However, you will only be paid service and/or make-up pay for the first 3 IPPT attempts, regardless of where you take your IPPT (i.e. EnergyOne, FCCs or during ICTs).

Am I still eligible for monetary awards?

For IPPT taken at the EnergyOne gyms, NSmen are not eligible for monetary awards. The maximum standard NSmen can achieve is Pass. Monetary awards are only applicable for IPPT taken at Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCC) or during In-Camp Training (ICT).

How is the IPPT at EnergyOne gym conducted?

IPPT@SAFRA is very similar to the IPPT administered at Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCCs), with the exception that the 2.4km station is conducted indoors on a calibrated treadmill to compensate for the differences in environmental conditions.

How long does it take for one IPPT@SAFRA session?

It takes an average of 90 mins to complete the whole test, which consists of the following:

  • Registration & safety briefing: 20 mins
  • Tests at static stations: 30 mins (including compulsory rest of 2 to 5 mins between each static station)
  • Compulsory rest before 2.4km run: 20 mins
  • 2.4km run: 20 mins (including briefing/orientation and warm-up)

Who conducts the IPPT at the gyms?

IPPT@SAFRA is conducted by Fitness Specialists from the SAF and includes comprehensive safety measures and precautions.

Why must I do a trial session?

Trial sessions are not mandatory. However, all NSmen participating in IPPT@SAFRA will be given three complimentary access to the gym for them to familiarise themselves with the treadmill for their 2.4km run.

Can I do a single station retest for my IPPT?

You may take single station retests (except for the 2.4km run) within 3 months. If you do not pass the single station within the 3 months, you will have to retake the entire IPPT.

How do standards differ between taking IPPT@SAFRA in air-conditioned EnergyOne Gyms and in the respective Army camps or FCCs?

SAF has undertaken extensive laboratory trials to examine the differences. It has been found that the absolute difference in performance is negligible.

For the 2.4km run on the treadmill, there will be no change to the passing time. However, the treadmill will be calibrated to achieve a pass standard of 2 points only and a 2% gradient introduced to compensate for the differences in environmental conditions.

Who calibrates the test requirements?

The Defence Medical and Environment Research Institute, together with the Army's Training Department and Army Medical Staff, are responsible for such calibrations, after careful study.

How many NSmen can the gym accomodate each time for IPPT@SAFRA?
